29 May 2015/ Police at Indira Gandhi International Airport have arrested a Nepalese man who posed as a Japanese tourist travelling to France.
Ngawang Rex reportedly presented himself as a Japanese man named Itau Nakano but the airport authorities became suspicious about his identity when they realised that the Indian arrival stamp on his passport appeared out of place.
He was arrested on Wednesday night as he attempted to board an Air France flight to Paris.
“He came for immigration clearance around 11pm on Wednesday. On going through his travel documents, it was found that the Indian arrival immigration stamp on it, dated May 26, was fake. IGI Airport is not using that stamp. This made us suspicious and his travel details were looked into,” Times of India quoted a ‘senior police officer’ at the Delhi airport.
The report appears to suggest Rex has Japanese-looking features.
The officials then checked the airport’s immigration log but apparently could not find any record of his (Nakano’s) arrival which further confirmed their suspicion about the travel documents carried by Rex alias Nakano.
TOI reported that the accused admitted that his documents were forged and that he indeed obtain the documents from another Nepalese man. “He said he had come to India from Nepal by bus and the Japanese passport was given to him in India by his Nepalese aide, Tsering Gurung, for Rs 2 lakh,” it said.
It is understood the Indian authorities have already filed a case against the accused.
